What is The Check?
The Check is a community-driven app that helps you discover hidden fees and tip pressure at restaurants, bars, cafes, and other establishments before you visit. Think of it as reviews, but specifically focused on billing transparency.
Is the app free?
Yes! The Check is completely free to use. You can browse reports, submit your own experiences, and save favorites without paying anything.
What kind of fees does the app track?
We track service charges, kitchen fees, health and wellness surcharges, living wage fees, and any other additional charges that might appear on your bill. Users can report both percentage-based fees and flat amounts.
What is "tip pressure"?
Tip pressure is our rating system for how strongly an establishment encourages tipping. It ranges from "No Pressure" (no tip suggestions at all) to "Mandatory" (automatic gratuity added). This helps you know what to expect before you visit.
How do I submit a report?
After visiting an establishment, open its page in the app and tap "Submit Report." You can rate the tip pressure, log any fees you encountered, add a star rating, and optionally upload photos of your receipt.
Are the reports verified?
Reports are submitted by real users who have visited these establishments. We encourage photo uploads of receipts to help verify fees, and our community-based approach means patterns emerge from multiple reports.
